I will never ignore the fact that I use to be obsessed with The Lion King. It was, after all, the first fandom I partook in any online community outside of social media sites.
I will note that the animations were very stunning. The landscape was beautifully done and keeping the tone of the original was a success, in my honest opinion. It kept right in line with the animation version almost word for word which I am still a little confused on if I enjoyed that or actually was disappointed in it. On one end, they tried to stick so close to the original that I felt it almost killed any creativity they could have added. Spoiler alert: For example, I did love the scene where Nala was trying to get out of Pride Rock and you see her trying to avoid the hyena patrols and even Scar himself in the movie. That was something I greatly enjoyed that was added to the remake because it added a new layer to the story.
The voice acting was amazing 90% of the time but there were a couple of scenes where the acting just didn't seem to fit with the mood or seemed rushed. Spoiler alert: for example, the scene where Mufasa gives Simba a lecture after the hyena incident and Simba explains he was just trying to be brave, it felt a little stale in that scene. It didn't tug my emotions quite like the original did. Maybe because the lack of ear movement in the remake really ruined emotions for me because even just the ears folding backwards would have created more mood. I am still baffled as to why Simbas ears were almost permanently faced forward and perky when he was a cub. The moment the hyenas showed up and scared Simba and Nala....his ears shouldn't have been facing forward. Side note: I did LOVE the setup of the hyenas being ruled by Shenzi instead of Scar in the remake. That was something I was not disappointed in.
I could keep going on but I have to start work. My overall feeling of the movie was great but not fantastic. I would suggest fans to watch it for sure but I would still watch the original as it evoked more emotions. I felt they could have set the same mood with the remake but they didn't. I didn't even cry at Mufasas death scene which I felt bad about. But I suppose I would give a 4/5 on animation, 2/5 on creativity, 4/5 on acting and 3/5 on story. Those are some solid numbers I feel comfortable sharing.
